WANTED POSTER- Eli Whitney

Eli Whitney
American Inventor and Manufacturer
(Dec.8.1765-Jan.8, 1825)B
Westborough, Mass.

He started a business where he sold nails when the Revolutionary War started. Then he started another business when the Revolutionary War ended, where he was selling hatpins and men’s walking sticks.
He invented the cotton gin. Many cotton planters at Mulberry Grove had a hard time cleaning their cotton and he told them that he knew a machine that could help them. So the Mulberry manager offered Whitney money for his invention. And the cotton gin could clean cotton 10 times better than any person could. Whitney had a downfall when his invention was too expensive to buy so people stop buying it for a while. But Whitney’s invention made him an important person in history. He owned two businesses; one was when the war started and one when the war ended.

My Philosophy of Government Paper

Chyann Howard
Section 8-9 Mr. Brasof
September 26
Is Government Necessary ?

I believe government is imperative for several reasons. People should be good, cooperative and nice to one another, but the reality is that people are greedy, mean and selfish. One of the reasons that we need government is to maintain order between us as people. If we do not have order then people would be out of control. Also, we have things that have directions like tables, chairs, computers and etc; if we didn’t have order people wouldn’t know how to put them together. We also need order because when people go places like stores, movie theaters, libraries, and other places people stand in lines to keep people from bumping one another and/or getting hurt.
Another reason is that if people would have committed a horrible crime people should be punished for their actions. Like if a man raped and murdered a female he should get life in prison or be executed. Or if there was a shoot-out and a man shot a 9 year old child the man should be convicted for at least 10 to 20 years in prison. People should get what they deserve if they do something wrong. Also, if a woman throwed acid on her ex-boyfriend she should be convicted 15 to 25 years in prison.
The other reason is laws. Laws are very important because if it wasn’t for laws lots of things wouldn’t be better in the 21st century. Like for example, African-Americans in the United States would probably still be in slavery in the south. And there wouldn’t be any famous African-Americans like Martin Luther King Jr, Rosa Parks, Maya Angelou, Queen Latifah, Mary J. Bligde, Luther Vandross and many more. And also African-American children wouldn’t be able to get a good education. Like me as a young African-American female if there were no laws I would be a slave working on a plantation in the south. But since there are laws I can get the education I deserve and achieve my goals to reach my dream of being a lawyer. If there were no laws African-Americans wouldn’t be able to go to the same places as Caucasian people like movie theaters, stores, restaurants, and even schools. And if there were no laws women wouldn’t have equal rights as much as men like women weren’t able to vote. Now there are laws and women can vote just like men can.
The next reason is ownership. Ownership is imperative to lots of people. Lots of people own houses, vehicles, televisions, stereo systems, furniture, cds, buildings, dvds, home appliances and more. If you own something it belongs to you not someone else. If someone took something that is yours and they don’t give you what is right fully yours, if you are a child you can go to an adult and settle it. Or if you are a teenager you can go to that person and say can I have my possession back, or if you are an adult and it’s a legal argument you probably have to go to court to settle it. Also, if someone destroyed something that was yours you can file a claim against that person and go to court, to settle your issue and state your case, see what the judge’s verdict is and if you prove your case right you might win your case.
I believe in Thomas Hobbes’ theory. I think Hobbes was right because people should be ruled by only one. And also people wouldn’t have anything to follow and people would be confused. If people weren’t ruled by one then people wouldn’t know what to follow or believe in. And also people should be good, cooperative and nice instead of being greedy, mean and selfish. If people were nice, good and cooperative I believe this world would be so much better. And finally, that is why I believe government is important and necessary in our society.

My Philosophy of Government

I believe that government is necessary. It is necessary because without government would have no order in our society. Government keeps us together as people. Also, it helps us know why we have a society that stops us from destroying one another. And we will stand together as the people.
